haha why thank you :) I’m sure Tumblr makes me looks much cooler than reality.
p.s. you should totally come off anon - love chatting with people on here.
There really is not a short story, but here is my best version of ‘short’:
My last relaxer was in 2011 - I went natural because I was curious about what my real hair texture looked like (when I first started this blog). I got a relaxer ‘later’ than most around the age of 11/12 and I always remember my hair being praised because it was so long and thick but also talked about negatively because it was so hard to ‘manage’.
When I went natural I fell in love with my hair and through that experience I found my own truth in my hair. I learned that it wasn’t hard to manage and it wasn’t tough, and unruly and unacceptable. I had believed everyone’s opinion and not explored it on my own to find my own answers. I learned how to care for it and nurture it and realized the beauty in it. However, what I noticed a few months ago was that the praise I received for having long thick hair as a natural child and as a relaxed teen and then again a natural adult had really become a crutch. I saw my hair as my beauty. I placed way too much of my confidence and value in it. As much as there are stories behind hair, we forget that it is just hair. Beauty is fleeting. I liked it because it made me feel secure in my looks. Anything psychical that becomes a crutch for me to feel better needs to be taken away - they distract from your true purpose. So that’s what I did. I ripped off my security blanket and I am realizing that I am more than the girl with ‘great hair’, I am not beautiful based on the strands on my head. I am more. I have non-physical characteristics that speak in much larger volumes than the the hair on my head could ever do.
I hope that answered your question. I will start recording some videos on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/CuriousAboutMyCurls) about my journey, overall I have learned a lot not just about hair, but about life and I enjoy sharing with those who want to listen - feel free to subscribe :)
Enjoy your day!
